چند ہفتے قبل وزیر زراعت تاکو ایٹو نے عوام کو درپیش مشکلات پر افسوس کا اظہار کیا تھا. لیکن گزشتہ ویک اینڈ پر ایک تقریب سے خطاب میں انہوں نے کہا، ”میں نے کبھی خود چاول نہیں خریدا کیونکہ میرے حامی مجھے اتنا چاول تحفے میں دیتے ہیں. کہ میں تقریباً اسے بیچ بھی سکتا ہوں۔‘‘

پیر کے روز ایٹو نے وضاحت کی کہ ان کا بیان ”مبالغہ آرائی‘‘ پر مبنی تھا. اور ان کی اہلیہ نے بھی اس پر ناراضگی ظاہر کی۔ ایٹو کے مطابق، ”میری بیوی نے مجھے. یاد دلایا کہ جب تحفے میں ملنے والا چاول ختم ہو جاتا ہے، تو وہ خریداری کرتی ہیں۔‘‘
منگل کو ایٹو نے بتایا کہ انہوں نے وزیر اعظم سے ملاقات کی ہے. اور انہیں عہدے پر برقرار رہنے کی اجازت دے دی گئی ہے۔ ”وزیر اعظم نے سخت الفاظ میں تنبیہ کی. لیکن ساتھ ہی حوصلہ افزا باتیں بھی کیں اور کہا کہ میں جو کام شروع کر چکا ہوں، اس کے نتائج دوں۔‘‘
